wharton memorial park
Project Description:
Wharton Memorial Park is a new multi-functional public space honoring veterans, the armed services, prisoners of war, and those missing in action. The purchase of a parcel separating two existing park properties facilitated re-imagining the entire 2-acre site as a single cohesive public space. The northern end of the park includes a shaded semi-circular pavilion surrounding a paved plaza, which opens onto a lawn area framed by shade trees. This space is intended to accommodate a variety of events and includes several memorial structures honoring veterans, the armed services, prisoners of war, and those missing in action. The southern portion of the park includes several new memorials along a winding path in a contemplative garden setting. Cor-ten steel was used as a material throughout the park, as a reflection of the town's iron- and steel-making heritage. Other materials mirror existing streetscape improvements along Wharton's Main Street.
